The problem

A network is designed around its degraded modes, not its headline throughput.

Advertised throughput describes normal operation. What separates a dependable infrastructure from a fragile one is how the network behaves when a link, a power supply or a device disappears.

Backup paths, traffic prioritisation and intervention procedures are settled with the architecture. Added later, they mean reworking the cabling, the addressing and sometimes the carrier contract.
