Mining and industry

On an isolated site, the public grid is an assumption, not a given.

The environment

Separating industrial systems from management systems is the first line of defence.

The controllers and supervision systems of an industrial site cannot be patched like an office workstation: their update cycle is long, sometimes non-existent, and stopping them costs production. Separation from the management systems is therefore the first protection, before any tooling. Every gateway between the two must be justified, documented and monitored.

Power comes next, and it is sized on a measurement, not on a nameplate. A load balance measured over several weeks of actual operation changes the sizing: estimated, it almost always leads to oversizing, which runs the generator far below its efficiency range and shortens its life. Fuel autonomy is calculated on the site’s real resupply lead time, never on a standard figure.

Finally, remoteness changes the economics of operation. A fault corrected remotely in ten minutes costs two days when someone has to be sent. Monitoring, named accounts and logged remote access are not conveniences: they are what makes the maintenance contract sustainable.

Dominant constraints

What this environment imposes

A dominant constraint governs architecture, partners, equipment and method more than any list of services does.

Questions to settle internally

An organisation that cannot answer these questions is not ready to launch the programme. Saying so is better than selling it a study.

  • Which circuits genuinely need backing up, and which can stop?
  • How long must the site hold without fuel resupply?
  • What gateways exist between the industrial systems and office IT, and who justified them?
  • Is the technical room’s cooling backed up alongside the servers?
  • Is there a window during which the installation can be shut down for servicing?
  • Who runs the periodic tests, and where is the result recorded?

Let us discuss the actual case.

Describe the site, the dominant constraint and the deadline. We will say what requires a preliminary study and what can be committed directly.
